Overview


We have an exciting opportunity for a Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst to join our Finance team. This is a newly created role to support the growth of the business and to ensure our team focus on financial control, planning and providing excellent customer experience to our stakeholders is maintained.


In this role you will be responsible for enhancing business insights for the Finance team through automation of reporting and data insights using information available in our data warehouse and other core operational systems. A key aspect of the role will be to develop robust data organisation and management that underpins the Finance functions and in doing so understanding the data setup and data process flows between our core Retail, Risk, IT and Finance Systems. Key expected outputs will be efficiencies with obtaining accurate (reconciled) and meaningful concise data for financial reporting purposes.


As SmartestEnergy Australia is a start-up energy business, this role will suit someone who is open to performing a variety of ad hoc tasks, who enjoys a fast-paced environment and can multitask, is keen on financial reporting and reconciliation improvements, and enjoys working with a variety of internal stakeholders.


As this role sits within the Finance team, an understanding of basic accounting principles will be advantageous.


In this role, you will be involved with the following:


Monthly reporting automation


  • Improve and automate the processes by which month end reporting data is received by the Finance team into a readily useable reconciled format. This includes consumption of the core customer contract data, along with other key valuation data used in our top line reporting;
  • Build exception reports to allow for efficient analysis and insights into drivers of movements and variances;
  • Work closely with the Risk, IT and Commercial teams to understand the data source location and queries used to generate core information received and used by Finance for month end reporting, and document key source data tables and queries used;
  • Data extraction and other miscellaneous reporting and reconciliation improvements as requested.

Finance system design improvements


  • Assist with scoping and redesigning the entity and structure setup in our general ledger system, working closely under direction of the Finance team, including performing the transfer and reconciliation checks of data;
  • between such entities and reporting periods as redesigned;
  • Build new useful reports in/from our general ledger system.

Dashboards and analytics


  • Build useful Finance dashboards, with key metrics and performance trackers, using Power BI and other analytical/visualisation tools.

Other/Ad-Hoc


  • Perform ad-hoc tasks as directed, such as population of templates with financial data both historic and forecast, perform data analysis on variances between risk and finance reporting, create data dictionaries for finance purposes and document processes and policies as needed.


To be successful in this role, you are likely to have the following skills/experience:


  • Energy industry experience is preferred, but not essential;
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications;
  • Previous experience in a similar role eg business intelligence analyst, data analyst, data scientist, financial reporting or business analyst;
  • Ability to interpret large amounts of complex data and utilise experience to make decisions when information is incomplete or inaccurate;
  • Experience in obtaining and concisely documenting user requirements and actioning those in a timely manner;
  • Strong technical skills; knowledge and experience working with technologies such as Python, Excel, VBA, SQL;
  • Experience in preparing dashboards and powerpoint presentations;
  • Experience with Salesforce, EnergyOne, Tally or Xero advantageous, but not essential.
